My Journey from Chemical Engineering to Digital Marketing: Lessons Learned

  • by

As a chemical engineer with an MBA in marketing, I had a somewhat unusual career trajectory. After spending a few years in the manufacturing industry, I decided to make a switch to sales. However, after a few years in sales, I felt that I needed a new challenge. That’s when I made the decision to move into digital marketing. Looking back on my journey, I realize that it was a difficult but rewarding experience. Here are some of the lessons I learned along the way.

  1. Be prepared to learn

When I first started out in digital marketing, I quickly realized that I had a lot to learn. There were new technologies to understand, new tools to master, and new strategies to implement. I had to be prepared to invest time and effort into learning these things. This meant reading books, attending conferences, and taking courses. It was challenging, but it was also exciting to be learning so much. Of many things, I realized that Linux was the key factor in making or breaking the Networking World. I also realized that PC-to-PC and PC to Server networking played an important role. Software industry was starting and booming.

  1. Keep an open mind

One of the things I learned in my transition from manufacturing to sales was the importance of keeping an open mind. This lesson was even more important when I made the switch to digital marketing. The field is constantly evolving, and it’s important to be open to new ideas and new ways of doing things. It’s easy to get stuck in old habits and ways of thinking, but being open to new approaches can lead to new opportunities. It was fun to observe that although manufacturing was the main business, it was the IT that called the shots. The MIS System, CRM, ERP and big names started rattling the conversation.

  1. Embrace data

One of the things I love about digital marketing is the abundance of data available. In manufacturing and sales, it can be difficult to measure success. In digital marketing, everything can be tracked and measured. This means that you can make data-driven decisions and continually optimize your campaigns for better results. It’s important to embrace data and use it to your advantage. This is happening now. So many data points. Initially, the server space, internet bandwidth and resources were short, unlike now. To manage the apps were a challenge but I learnt to do it.

  1. Be creative

Digital marketing is both an art and a science. While data is important, creativity is also essential. You need to be able to come up with new and innovative ideas to capture the attention of your target audience. This can be challenging, but it’s also one of the things that makes digital marketing so rewarding. When you come up with a great idea and see it implemented successfully, it’s a great feeling. You need to convince the management and also manage the technology. Mastering both made me feel like a complete man.

  1. Build relationships

In digital marketing, relationships are key. Whether it’s building relationships with your clients, your team members, or your audience, it’s important to invest time and effort into building strong connections. This means being responsive, communicative, and transparent. It also means being willing to listen and understand the needs of others. As the software industry progressed, many options became available and the trained workforce also started dictating the terms. Companies would prefer to work on ASP.NET projects as there were many techies available with it.

  1. Keep up with the latest trends

As I mentioned earlier, digital marketing is constantly evolving. New technologies, new platforms, and new strategies are emerging all the time. It’s important to stay up to date with the latest trends and developments in the field. This means reading industry blogs, attending conferences, and networking with other professionals. It’s also important to be willing to experiment with new ideas and take risks.

In conclusion, my journey from chemical engineering to digital marketing was a challenging but rewarding experience. I learned a lot along the way, including the importance of being prepared to learn, keeping an open mind, embracing data, being creative, building relationships, and keeping up with the latest trends. I hope that my experiences can help others who are considering a career transition or who are just starting out in the field of digital marketing.
